CONCEPTUAL ILLUSTRATIONS
A collection of freelance projects based on existing texts and self-directed theses
LA VITA {THESIS}
A coupling of images, accompanied by a poem, created in attempt to make sense of the unknowability of life and death.
The theory that humanity’s existence was designed so that the universe could experience itself is one possible answer to the unsolvable reason of our being.
COMING OUT OF YOUTH {THESIS}
A series of images and poems created to epitomize junctures of my adolescence.
As a collection, these images string a narrative of personal growth, critical awareness, and self acceptance.
THE FOREST VERSUS OUTER SPACE {THESIS}
• Top Left: The Forest • Top Right:The Ridge • Bottom Left: The Troposphere • Bottom Right: Outer Space
A series which visualizes the evolution of a relationship from one of sexual desire – envisaged by the forest – to one of emotional connectivity – envisaged by outer space. In the initial image, the forest represents mystery and lust in its fertile overgrowth. As the series transitions, elements of the forest evolve into open landscapes then further into cosmic shapes. Where the forest represented hidden desire, space represents an exposed vulnerability. In space's depths, emotions are explored and individuals become tethered by a gravitational trust.
BLOOD BAN {SELF DIRECTED}
This illustration ties the topics of blood donation and homosexuality through the fusing of male anatomy and the blood bag. The cold sensation of medical sterility is contrasted with the warmth of a MSM union, reminding the observer that medical decisions made for the protection of some can adversely dehumanize another.
Gay men still face global discrimination when trying to donate blood, organs and, tissues due to residual stigma of the HIV/Aids pandemic. Since 1977 the issue of blood donation has been repeatedly fought for and reformed in Canada’s history. Health Canada regulations still state that organs donated from men who have sex with other men (MSM) are “high risk”.
FIGURAL INSECURITY {THESIS}
A series which utilizes stylized figures in conjunction with suggestive environments to illustrate personal insecurities:
Left: Deals with body language and a difficulty to comfortably exist in public spaces.
Middle: Deals with the duality of isolation–its serenity and its ability to invite crippling thoughts.
Right: Deals with gender conflicts and a hesitation to confidently present both masculine and feminine energies.
